Account Based Marketing Agency: 5 Costly, Real Traps

An account based marketing agency can spend a year on fifty accounts and show nothing. Five costly traps on list size, sales buy-in, content and measurement.

An account based marketing agency sells a seductive idea: stop chasing everyone, pick the accounts you want, and surround them. The idea is sound. The execution fails in five predictable places, and four of them are decided before any work begins.

These are the traps worth checking for in the first conversation, because each one is expensive to discover in month eight.

1. The account based marketing agency list is too long

A real account based marketing agency works to a named plan per account. Thirty accounts is a programme. Four hundred accounts is segmented demand generation with a better name, charged at the higher rate.

So ask how many accounts the agency recommends and what the per-account plan contains. Moreover, if the answer is a persona rather than named companies, you are buying something else and should price it accordingly.

2. Sales was never really in the room

An account based marketing agency cannot run this alone, because the programme only works when a named salesperson follows up a named account at a known moment. Marketing can create the conditions; it cannot make the call.

Thirty accounts with a plan each, or it is not account based.

Therefore get the sales team’s commitment in writing before signing: who owns which accounts, what they do when an account engages, and how quickly. Consequently the most common failure is not bad marketing but excellent marketing that nobody acted on.

3. The content is generic underneath the logo

Personalisation at an account based marketing agency often means inserting a company name into an asset every account receives. Buyers notice immediately, and the attempt reads worse than no personalisation at all.

So ask any account based marketing agency to show one asset built for one account, and read it as that buyer would. In short, if it would still make sense with another logo on it, it is not account based.

4. The measurement window is shorter than the sales cycle

Enterprise cycles run nine to eighteen months, which is longer than most account based marketing agency contracts. However most contracts are twelve, which means the programme is judged before the deals it created can close, usually on engagement metrics invented to fill the gap.

Agree the leading indicators up front instead: accounts engaged, new contacts reached inside a buying group, meetings with named roles. Furthermore, write down which of those would justify a renewal, so that conversation is not improvised under pressure.

5. Nobody agreed what an account based marketing agency means by engaged

Nevertheless the quietest trap is definitional. An account based marketing agency reports an account as engaged; the client assumed that meant a conversation; it meant two page views and a LinkedIn ad impression.

Pin the definition down in week one, with thresholds and the roles that count. Because the whole programme is reported against it, a vague definition makes every later number unarguable in both directions.

What a fair first engagement looks like

Before the terms, one more thing worth saying plainly. This method suits companies selling six-figure contracts into committees of five or more people. Below that, the research cost per account exceeds what the account is worth, and ordinary demand generation will outperform it on the same budget.

Twenty to forty named accounts, a per-account plan you can read, a named salesperson per account, leading indicators agreed in writing, and six months before anyone judges the pipeline. An account based marketing agency confident in the method will accept those terms.

For the ratios behind a narrower, channel-led programme, our four LinkedIn outbound accounts turned 1,086 replies into 370 booked sales calls, which is a useful benchmark when someone forecasts enterprise engagement rates.

For checking the public financial position of the enterprises on your list, the SEC’s EDGAR full-text search is free and authoritative. Our B2B lead generation service covers the outbound layer, and the questions to ask a B2B marketing agency applies the same scrutiny more broadly.
